Located in northern Tanzania, Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest peak in Africa at 19,341 feet (5,895 meters) and holds the title of the world’s tallest free-standing mountain. As one of the iconic Seven Summits, it rises majestically above the East African plains with its snow-capped summit forming part of the Kilimanjaro National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site rich in diverse flora and fauna.
Kilimanjaro’s dormant volcanic slopes offer an unforgettable trekking experience through five distinct ecological zones from lush tropical rainforest to alpine desert and ultimately, the arctic summit. Climbing Kilimanjaro is not just a physical journey; it’s a deeply personal milestone and a dream for adventure seekers across the globe.
The good news is, you don’t need technical climbing skills to reach the summit. Trekkers from ages 10 to 75 have successfully made the journey with Hike Kilimanjaro. All that’s required is reasonable fitness, strong determination, and smart planning.
That said, altitude is the biggest challenge, not the terrain. This is why we emphasize slow ascents and proper acclimatization. With our experienced guides and daily health checks, we significantly increase your chances of safely reaching Uhuru Peak, the mountain’s highest point.
Unlike third-party resellers, Hike Kilimanjaro is a locally owned and operated company. We manage every aspect of our expeditions directly from hiring and training our mountain crew to overseeing operations. This ensures consistent quality and care for every climber.
Our team includes certified, English-speaking guides, professional cooks, and well-trained porters. We provide honest advice about gear, training, and altitude strategy, and we’re with you every step of the way from airport pickup to your summit celebration.

There are seven official routes to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Each has its scenery, difficulty level, and acclimatization profile. Most routes start from the southern or western side, except for Rongai, which approaches from the north.
Lemosho – Scenic and gradual; ideal for acclimatization, Machame – Popular with dramatic scenery, Marangu – The only route with hut accommodations, Rongai – Quiet, dry trail from the north, Northern Circuit – Longest route and best for acclimatization, Umbwe – Steep and challenging; for experienced trekkers, and Shira – Remote route starting at high altitude.
Still unsure which to pick? Take a look at our full comparison of Kilimanjaro climbing routes and see our in-depth breakdown of Lemosho vs Machame to make an informed choice.
The most favorable seasons are the dry months: December to early March, and June through October. These periods offer clearer skies, better trail conditions, and higher summit success rates.
Avoid the rainy months of April, May, and November, when trails become muddy and visibility drops. For more detail, read our month-by-month Kilimanjaro weather guide.
Packing the right gear is essential for both comfort and safety. You’ll need to bring layered clothing for varying climates, waterproof gear, insulated gloves, hiking boots, a quality backpack, and a four-season sleeping bag.
To help, we provide a comprehensive packing list to every client. We also offer gear rentals to reduce your load and ensure you’re properly equipped for summit success.
